You may have heard this staggering statistic from LA Weekly, KPCC or the LA Times: There has been a 55% increase since 2013 of women experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles. Another way to put it is that 1 in 3 homeless people is now a woman.
There are many factors that have led to this increase. Women already earn less than men, so when the economy is not doing well, women are the first to be affected. Many flee domestic violence and sexual assault and end up on the street. The streets, however, can be just a violent. Shelters are designed primarily for men, and few programs exist outside of downtown that focus solely on women’s needs.
That is why we began our Women’s Program. It’s only for women, and it’s a welcoming place where they can feel safe, build camaraderie, and connect to housing resources. The staff cook a beautiful breakfast for the ladies, and they get to enjoy their meal without the fear of harassment. They do arts and crafts together and simply relax in each other’s company, away from the bustle of the streets.
We believe that this program is vital for the growing number of women who experience homelessness in Hollywood. The Women’s Program only meets once a week on Fridays, but we’d like to expand that. We are raising $30,000 to hire a Women’s Program Coordinator to run our Women’s Program and to provide women-driven services and case management throughout the week in our building.
You can help us to end women’s homelessness and isolation in our community!
